You’ve all heard the phrase “what’s your why?” when working on goals and outcomes, but what’s under the why is what is most important. Every goal or outcome we desire has a direct feeling attached to it. For example, if I want to make X amount of money in my business, and I ask myself why, I see I would have financial freedom, I could take more family vacations, I could pay off my house, etc.
These reasons are compelling, but when working with my clients we always go one layer deeper and ask how will you feel when you reach this outcome? How would it feel to take more vacations with family? “I would feel more love and connection which brings me joy.” How would it feel to pay off the house? “I would feel more safety and security.” How would it feel to have financial freedom? “I would have more time and choice in my day-to-day life.”
Once we know what feeling we are going for we start finding ways to feel those feelings now versus waiting until the goal is achieved. How could I feel more love and connection now? Start taking walks with my family every night, or go on a date with my spouse. How could I feel more freedom in my finances now? Cut back in an area in my budget so I can see my spending decrease and my savings increase. So yes, the power is in the why you want something, but the juice and fulfillment is in the how
you’re going to feel when you get there!
